Nurse Practitioner - Endocrinology
Job Description
SUMMARY:
An Endocrinology Nurse Practitioner specializes in diagnosing and managing endocrine system disorders, like diabetes, thyroid issues, growth disorders, and hormonal imbalances, by providing comprehensive care including patient assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning, medication prescription, and patient education, all within their scope of practice and under the guidance of a supervising physician. Common endocrine conditions managed by a nurse practitioner are: Diabetes Mellitus (Type 1 and Type 2); Hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism; Adrenal gland disorders (e.g., Addison's disease, Cushing's syndrome); Pituitary gland disorders; Growth hormone deficiency; Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS); Menopause management; Osteoporosis
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

- Patient assessment, by conducting thorough physical examinations, taking medical histories, and reviewing laboratory results related to endocrine conditions.
- Evaluate signs and symptoms of patients.
- Interpret diagnostic tests like blood glucose monitoring, thyroid function tests, hormone level checks, and imaging studies to identify endocrine disorders.
- Develop individualized treatment plans based on diagnosis, including medication management, lifestyle modifications, and dietary counseling.
- Prescribe medications like insulin, oral diabetes medications, thyroid hormone replacement therapy, and other hormone-related medications within their scope.
- Provide comprehensive patient education regarding endocrine conditions, disease management, medication adherence, self-monitoring techniques, and potential complications.
- Collaborate and consult with endocrinologists to manage complex cases and coordinate patient care.
- Supervise and/or administer required tests, immunizations, injections, and medications.
- Establish and revise written medical protocol in collaboration with physicians.
- Attending staff meetings and serving on committees as needed.
- Participate in the teaching of medical students, residents, and other students.
- Participate in quality assurance activities.
- Refer patients to physicians or other health care providers and facilities as needed and monitor the outcome of the referral.
- Consult and collaborate with other professionals as needed.
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with faculty members, students, residents, staff, patients, and other third parties. Ability to operate computer, keyboard, and printers. Ability to concentrate under high demands and listen effectively. Ability to organize tasks; work as a team member and independently using Nurse Practitioner skills with a variety of professional disciplines. Knowledge of ICD-10 and CPT coding. Convey a professional and positive image and attitude.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor’s degree in nursing and successful completion of a nurse practitioner program at the master level. Currently licensed in the State of Tennessee as an RN, and ANCC certified as a nurse practitioner in a specialty area. Certified or eligible for certificate of fitness in the State of Tennessee. Also must be willing to obtain AACE certification within 3 years of hire with support.
