4 Ways ReadNPlay Promotes Healthy Growth
Did you know ETSU Health writes and publishes a book series that can help your child learn about healthy growth and safety? Since the launch of the interactive program, pediatricians have shared tips throughout the series to parents and caregivers during their child’s first 18 months of life.
At ETSU Health Pediatrics, parents receive the “My Baby Book” during their newborns first visit to the clinic. Not only is it interactive and filled with several great tips, but parents may also use it as a keepsake to store photos, memories and milestones of their child. The series is also distributed at ETSU Health Family Medicine clinics, the Johnson City Community Health Center and other area clinics.
Along with “My Baby Book,” there are three books in the series to promote a child’s growth, with a fourth book currently in the works. The series features the adventures of three friends named Squirrel, Owl and Raccoon. Each book in the series is based on a different health and safety focus and includes tips for parents and caregivers.
Here are 4 ways ReadNPlay promotes healthy growth through its children’s books:
1. Play More
Be unplugged. Spend time away from the screens, such as watching television and playing video games. Go outside and play, take in the fresh air and enjoy some nice weather.
2. Play Together
Be an active family. Go on walks, play in the park or take the dog out on an adventure.
Promote activity in the household to instill healthy behaviors throughout their childhood.
3. Play Safely
Know and understand what a hazard to a small child can be. While outside, remain alert
and play in safe places, such as a park or field. Be aware of vehicles and refrain from playing in roads.
4. Fuel to Play
A healthy diet is important to any child’s growth and development. Eating breakfast every day and including more fruits and vegetables can promote a child’s healthy eating habits. This will give a child more energy throughout their day to learn and play.
Community partnerships and outreach are a cornerstone of the program. Every year, faculty, staff, residents and students engage with thousands of families at events throughout the Northeast Tennessee region. At these events, ReadNplay connects families with education, information and resources in a fun and relaxed environment.
The ReadNPlay series is available in both English and Spanish. Those interested in a copy of the ReadNPlay baby book can download the free ReadNPlay mobile application on Google Play and iTunes.
